Dear Brothers –
We are all family and it is not often we have the opportunity to pool our resources and support a brother in need. We now have that opportunity, and here’s how we can all help.
Brother Derek Wood (Fall 1983) was diagnosed in March 2016 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. To say this news rocked his world would be an understatement. It has truly changed his life and that of his family. Derek, his wife (Tammy) and their four kids are approaching this challenge head on and with hope. Brother Wood has a great support network in his immediately family, friends from Hawaii where he grew up, the Kappa Sigma brothers and through his business colleagues in the commercial real estate/leasing industry. Derek has had a successful business career, but the costs to battle this disease are more than any of us can bear, especially because this cruel disease will inevitably strip away his ability to work. That time often comes sooner rather than later.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Some of Derek’s pledge brothers are banding together to help him in his battle against ALS. Overall, the goal is to raise monies that support Derek’s short- and long-term needs outside of what is covered by medical insurance. To be candid, there are many financial costs outside of insurance: nutritionists, home remodeling for wheelchair access and numerous other changes, holistic treatments, a customized vehicle/van that provides easier accessibility and transportation, and much more.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/mk_page_section][mk_page_section bg_stretch=”true” full_width=”true”][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”205″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/mk_page_section][mk_page_section bg_stretch=”true”][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]This year the Brian Earl-Delta Eta Alumni Golf Tournament has committed all the profits to support Derek’s cause and that of ALS research. In addition to the assisting him with the needs referenced above, proceeds from the tournament will also support the research of Derek’s physician, one of the leading doctors in the country in ground-breaking stem cell research for ALS. To learn more about this promising research and Dr. Eva Feldman, please see the following http://www.pnrdfeldman.org/research/als/#ALS.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]Currently the tournament has just reached break-even, so every dollar, hole sponsor, dinner sponsor and other related tournament contributions will be profits that go directly to help our brother and fuel critical research. We know this tournament can raise much-needed funds for a fraternity brother, and that’s exactly why this tournament exists. Brother Brian Earl would be proud of this effort!
This golf tournament is just one of the ways that Derek’s PBs are raising funds, and we’ll send out more details on other opportunities to support Derek’s cause as soon as we have the info.
Below is a list of opportunities where you can help, whether you are able to play in the tournament or not.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/mk_page_section][mk_page_section bg_stretch=”true” full_width=”true”][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_single_image image=”215″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/mk_page_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Hole Sponsors ($1,000): This year we will have more than one sponsor per hole, so the opportunity to sponsor a hole directly or through your company is available. A hole sponsor gets four spots in the tournament as well as recognition on www.deltaetagolf.com and the opportunity to send out an email message to the 800 alumni in our database. If you can’t play, then it can be a great gift to your client(s) or others to play.
Dinner Sponsorship ($500). This sponsorship gets you recognition on the website and signage at the golf registration and dinner.
Presenting Sponsorship ($5,000). In all correspondence, your name or company name will be directly associated and marketed (e.g. – The Delta Eta Golf Tournament presented by Your Company). This will also get you a foursome in the tournament, the e-mail message out to the 800 alumni in our database and full recognition day of.
Target Prize Golf Hole Sponsor ($550): This is one of the golf skills challenges we are setting up on the course. At the golf course we will also have a target set up on a Par 3 for a 50/50 competition. Golfers will have the opportunity to drop $50 into the pot. The shot closest to the hole gets 50% of the pot and we send the other half to Derek. A sponsorship here gets you a $50 entrance in the 50/50 contest, inclusion on the sponsor list on the website and signage at the 50/50 Par 3.
At the end of the day, we want to raise funds for Derek and specific ALS research to find a cure and drive awareness of ALS. To learn more about ALS and the challenge that Brother Wood is up against, please see this website. ALS Video – 050616V9.mov OR Google Drive
Thanks for your support. We’ll see you out in Irvine on September 23rd.

four children: Kenneth, 27; Connor, 19; Tyler, 17; and Jason, 16.

*Yes, my wife is the princess in our home with nothing but boys!
University/College:
University of Southern California, 1986
Kappa Sigma Fraternity – Pledge Class Fall 1983
Business Career:
I started my career at CB Commercial Real Estate in 1987. In 1994, I joined Victoria Ward Ltd. as Director of Real Estate. Today, Victoria Ward is owned by Howard Hughes Corporation and is one of their most important assets. In 1998, AMC Theatres recruited me to move from my beloved island and handle real estate site selection for the eastern U.S. Suffice it to say that was a life-changing experience. Two years later the owners of the prestigious shopping center, NorthPark, convinced me to move to Dallas and handle the center’s expansion. Today NorthPark is consistently ranked as the fifth-highest grossing shopping center in the United States with more than $1.2 billion in annual sales.
ALS Discovery/Story:
My personal story:
In February 2015 I was experiencing pain in my calf and was diagnosed with an ankle support problem and compartment syndrome. When surgery that July failed to improve my condition, I went from an orthopedic surgeon to a neurosurgeon to a neurologist.
Months of MRI and CT scans all over my body provided no answers, and I continued to suffer from muscle weakness, muscle denervation, fasciculations and really bad blood results. Finally, I went to an ALS specialist, and on March 10, 2016, received news that changed our lives forever: I have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
My wife Tammy and I left the appointment in a fog, in tears and scared out of our minds. Within a few hours we had begun to research this terrible disease, trying to find any way we can to halt its progression.
We have not and will not stop.
Tammy and I have been extremely aggressive in our fight against ALS, and her support and encouragement have been incredible. Tammy is following every holistic protocol with me, and making this journey together has made everything easier for me.
We are doing anything and everything possible to stop the progression, including IV therapies, infrared saunas, a hyperbaric chamber, steam showers, colonics, ionic foot baths, massage, lymphatic drainage, clean nutrition (no gluten, sugar, additives, substitutes or dairy) and vitamins galore! Tammy is constantly on the lookout for anything chemical-free, from personal toiletries and cleaning products to pesticides.
We are so fortunate to have support from the owners of NorthPark Center, Nancy Nasher and David Haemisegger. Nancy and David, along with business colleague David Forbes, have also opened doors and are making powerful connections for stem cell trials in the United States.
I am so very fortunate to have the unconditional love from childhood friends from Hawaii, my USC fraternity brothers, friends, business colleagues and our immediate family and four amazing boys, Kenneth, Connor, Tyler and Jace…
I am forever humbled.
We are fighting this with everything we have in us and hope to help others as well during this next chapter and journey in our lives.
